NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Replacing regular meals with shakes and prepackaged entrees boosts obese teens’ weight loss in the early stages of dieting, new research shows.

But these “meal replacements” were no better than a standard low-calorie diet for helping young people continue losing weight over the course of a year, Dr. Robert L. Berkowitz of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and his colleagues found.

Meal replacements can help obese adults lose weight, but what about obese teens? That’s what researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia wondered. And they set out to get the answer, studying 113 obese adolescents for a year.

Some adolescents initially were assigned to eat fewer calories (1,300 to 1,500 a day), but of normal food. Others were told to take in three SlimFast Shakes, a “pre-packaged meal” and servings of fruits or vegetables.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Requiring fast-food restaurants in New York City to post calorie counts on menus did little to cut the number of calories children and teens consumed, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

They found that children and adolescents noticed the calories posted on the menu but the calorie counts made little difference in what they chose to order. The researchers said taste was the most important factor the children and teens gave for their menu selections.

The study, published online in the International Journal of Obesity, challenges the notion that calorie labeling affects purchasing behavior of teens or parents buying food for their children.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Health officials Thursday announced a new effort to curb America’s obesity epidemic by moving science from the lab into clinical trials to find practical ways for prevention and treatment.

“This plan is a bold blueprint that will encourage the research community to examine the epidemic of obesity from diverse perspectives,” National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Francis Collins said in a statement.

More than a third of adults and nearly 17 percent of children in the United States are obese, increasing their chances of developing health problems including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease and some cancers.
