But how many pounds they actually shed didn’t seem to matter, and it’s not clear that weight loss itself played a role, one expert said.

Obesity is a well-known risk factor for many medical conditions, including depression. Previous research has suggested that by losing even a small percentage of their body weight, heavy people can improve their physical and mental health, even if they remain obese.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – While the low-fat diet craze led some doctors to worry that Americans would instead start eating too many carbohydrates, a new study suggests that eating low-fat doesn’t have to increase carbohydrate-fueled health risks.

Instead, if extra carbohydrates are part of a diet plan that includes more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, the risk of diabetes – the biggest related health concern — could actually drop, at least in older women, according to the findings.

However, a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet could create problems in people who already have diabetes, researchers caution.

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Campbell Soup Co. is planning to spend $10 million over the next decade on a new initiative to reduce obesity and hunger among children in Camden, the company’s impoverished hometown.

Company officials plan to announce the initiative Wednesday but gave The Associated Press details in advance.

“We want to build hope in Camden,” Campbell President and CEO Douglas Conant said. “And we think we can.”
