Experts Issue Guidelines on Safe Weight Loss for Athletes (HealthDay)

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

MONDAY, June 20 (HealthDay News) — Gymnasts, wrestlers and boxers often feel pressure to lose weight to boost performance, but the drastic methods they sometimes use — including strictly limiting calories and intentional dehydration — can be dangerous to their health, experts warn.

To offer guidance to athletes, coaches and parents, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association has issued a new set of guidelines for safe weight loss by athletes.

They include: using body composition assessments to measure lean body mass versus fat; gradually shedding no more than 1.5 percent of body weight a week; eating a balanced diet that includes all food groups; and losing weight under the supervision of nutrition, health and weight management experts.

Q & A: How Safe is the Weight-Loss Drug Contrave? (LiveScience.com)

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

A weight-loss drug called Contrave may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the coming weeks if the agency follows the advice of one of its panels, which recently weighed in on the matter.

On Tuesday, the FDA panel voted 13 to 7 to recommend the drug for approval, according to news reports. The FDA often follows the recommendations of its panels, and is scheduled to make a final decision regarding Contrave by Jan. 31.

Orexigen to U.S. panel: diet pill safe for approval (Reuters)

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Orexigen Therapeutics Inc’s Contrave, the last of a trio of new weight-loss drugs, can effectively help patients shed pounds, the biotech company told a panel of U.S. medical advisers on Tuesday at a meeting set to focus on heart risks.

Company officials are facing a Food and Drug Administration panel of outside advisers who have already rejected two competing diet drugs this year and are likely to have tough questions about the pill’s effect on blood pressure and pulse rates, among other safety concerns.

Can obese pregnant women safely shed pounds? (Reuters)

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Women who are very obese may be able to safely lose some weight during pregnancy — and possibly reduce their risk of needing a cesarean section, a new study suggests.

The findings, reported in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, add to evidence that at least some obese women may be able to shed pounds during pregnancy without harming themselves or their baby.

But researchers still caution that women should not start a weight-loss diet during pregnancy, and should instead talk with their doctor about any healthy diet and lifestyle changes.

Weighing effectiveness versus risk in obesity drugs

Thursday, December 13th, 2012
In their quest to find drugs to curb obesity, scientists have had about as much success as long-term dieters who want to stay thin — which is to say, very little. In fact, the last year has been so bleak on the research front that some experts are questioning whether a long-desired safe and effective diet pill can be found.

Advisory panels for the Food and Drug Administration recommended against approval of two experimental weight-loss drugs this year — Lorqess in September and Qnexa in July — citing unacceptable risks for unimpressive benefits. Another drug, Meridia, was withdrawn from the market in October after it was linked to higher risks of heart attacks and strokes.

Safety Concerns Arise Over Airport X-Ray Scanner Radiation Levels

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

The oversite of upkeep for full-body X-ray scanners by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has come into question after a number of errors were discovered among device maintenance inspection reports. The agency is in the process of re-testing a total of 247 machines located in thirty-eight airports across the U.S. after maintenance records indicated that a certain type of machine showed radiation levels ten times higher than expected.

Fresh is Best in Reducing Harmful BPA Levels

Tuesday, January 1st, 2013

The chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) is a man-made plastic component found in hundreds of commercial applications such as the inside lining of metal drink and food containers, polyvinyl chloride plastics, and epoxy resins. It has been used in toys, baby bottles, vinyl goods, and many other products that the American consumer uses everyday. Studies report that the amount of BPA that leaches depends more on the temperature of the contents and the container itself than on other factors.
